The social performance teams at our Centre and at Teck have launched a personal skills development program to strengthen leadership among women living in the fishing coves of Chanavayita, Cáñamo, and Caramucho.

This program, which will benefit 30 women—leaders, shellfish gatherers, and entrepreneurs—from these coves near Iquique, will delve into key aspects of their personal development, previously defined by the participants themselves. This initiative is part of Teck’s commitment to the social development of its neighboring communities, with an emphasis on fostering leadership skills and promoting opportunities for women’s growth.

The program already has a group of 15 «ambassadors» who will seek out suitable women to participate in this project, considering factors such as time, interest, and the organization they represent.

This project, launched this November, is structured around 5 modules that will be distributed monthly according to the following themes: self-knowledge and self-esteem; limiting beliefs; emotional management; work-life balance; and empowerment.

These modules were designed based on the needs identified by 131 women from these coastal communities through a survey administered and completed by them in November 2024.

This project is supported by Teck Quebrada Blanca and is led by the Teck team, comprised of Cristian Berríos, Macarena Machado, Andrés Oyarzún, Dominique Lohmayer, and Krishna Cerda. The SMI-ICE-Chile team is led by researchers from the Social Performance and Resource Governance area of our Centre, Camila Cabrera, Catalina Bravo and Francisca Rivero.
