In an extensive feature published in the February edition, the General Manager and Acting Executive Director of SMI Chile was asked about the key role that collaboration among different stakeholders has come to play in the development of the mining industry.

Francisca Rivero shared the Centre’s perspective alongside prominent representatives and executives from the sector, including Marko Razmilic, President of the Asociación de Industriales de Antofagasta; Juan José Ronsecco, President of Corproa; Soledad Jeria, Country Head of Rio Tinto; and Paula Arenas, Executive Director of Compromiso Minero.

“Collaboration has become strategic in the mining industry because the challenges currently facing the sector are highly complex, interconnected and cannot be addressed in isolation,” said Francisca Rivero. “There is growing consensus that the viability of a mining project depends on multiple factors — economic, environmental, social and heritage-related — that must be managed in an integrated manner.”

Francisca Rivero emphasised that, in this context of high complexity, collaboration becomes an enabling process for projects, making it possible to share knowledge, reduce risks and build legitimate solutions among the various stakeholders involved. This is particularly relevant, she stressed, when considering three key dimensions that do not always naturally align: the increasing demand to produce critical minerals, the need for social legitimacy of projects, and the protection of highly fragile ecosystems.

“When these dimensions fail to come together within a common agenda, territorial conflicts arise that may lead to litigation and undermine trust and project continuity. Territorial collaboration, based on dialogue and negotiation, makes it possible to align interests, recognise differences and build agreements on more solid foundations.”
