Laura Mottola represented us as a speaker at the CIIT Latam Congress 2025, recently held in Lima. Doug Aitken, executive director of SMI-ICE-Chile, took advantage of the opportunity to hold a series of meetings with government authorities, academic and industry leaders to explore opportunities for collaboration in the neighboring country.
At this latest edition of CIIT Peru, held in Lima, Laura Mottola presented on emerging technologies that are driving sustainability in the industry, and Doug Aitken participated as a guest presenter.
This international conference on innovation in mining featured experts from Codelco (Chile), Anglo American (Peru), Compañía Minera Antamina (Peru), Glencore (Chile), and other Peruvian and international companies.
During his visit to Lima, Doug Aitken, Executive Director of SMI-ICE-Chile, held a busy schedule of meetings with industry and academic leaders, seeking to open new opportunities for collaboration in Peru, a country with significant mining development. Aitken met with Gustavo De Vinatea Bellatin, General Manager of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers, the leading institution training mining engineers in Peru. He also visited UTEC – the University of Engineering and Technology of Peru, where he met with Ignacio Montero Dasso, Director of Research, Development, and Innovation; Patricia Orbegoso, Head of Internationalization; and Julien Noel, Director of University Experience.
Doug Aitken also had the opportunity to showcase the Center’s work at an event organized by Trade and Investment Queensland, where various suppliers from this Australian state presented their contributions to the mining industry. Along with meeting with Maree Ringland, Australian Ambassador to Peru, he visited the Ministry of Energy and Mines, where he was welcomed by Mario Cateriano, First Secretary of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers; Walter Sánchez, Deputy Director of the Ministry; and Rose-Marie Michilot, Head of the Office of Planning, Investment Programming, and International Cooperation.

With the support of the various mining stakeholders in that country, we believe we can contribute to solutions for sustainable mining and the training of professionals,” explains Doug Aitken. “We are grateful to the people with whom we had the opportunity to meet to explore collaboration opportunities in the neighboring country.”
